Jess finds himself facing off with three gunmen in Bannon, Texas, who had been beating up on an old man. After killing two of them and running the other one out of town, he runs into two Texas Rangers who question him about the two dead bodies still in the street.

After a suitable explanation, and finding out who Jess is, the two Rangers invite him to ride with them after a ruthless killer, Sid Black. Jess declines, wanting to make it to Stratton, Texas, to propose a business venture to Henry Stratton and finally take some time to rest up.

After finally reaching Stratton, he learns about the murders of the two Texas Rangers, whom he declined to help and he feels somewhat responsible. After proposing his business venture to Henry Stratton, he finds himself riding with John Bodine again, going after Sid Black.

STRATTON FiftyNinth in a Series of Jess Williams Westerns A Jess Williams Western Book 59 edition by Robert J Thomas Literature Fiction eBooks

Stratton is number 59 in the Jess Williams series by Robert J Thomas.

Jess is on his way to Stratton to propose a real estate venture to Henry Stratton. On the way, he's asked by two Texas Rangers to help them track down a serial killer. Jess beggs off, in order to conclude his business venture in Stratton. Jess gets sidetracked a bit but eventually makes it to Stratton where he discovers that the two Rangers were killed by the man they were tracking.

This is one of the better novels in the Jess Williams series. Once again, Shadow makes an appearance to lend a paw to Jess when he needs it. Even though the Williams series depends upon a proven formula, they never seem to get old. The actual 'Old West' never had anywhere near as many gunfights as portrayed by Thomas, the Jess Williams series wouldn't be the same without them. Including Stratton, Jess Williams has put down 1,072 bad men +/- 10.

Some parts of the formula work and others don't. The character John Bodine is getting a bit threadbare. It's annoying that he's continuously bumming off of Jess' good nature and thick wallet. Every time he is near Williams, Bodine helps himself to anything he wants, from horses and guns, to food and accomodations; all at Williams' expense. It doesn't seem to annoy Williams much, but it's really tiresome to read about. I think it's Bodine's turn to feel a bit ashamed of himself for taking advantage of his wealthy friend, who earns his money by putting his life in danger for each and every bounty he collects. But... that's just me.

The Jess Williams novel never seem to get old. I always wait with baited breath for the next installment to hit Amazon.

If you've never read one of the Williams novels, start with the first one, 'The Reckoning'. Try it, you'll be happy you did.

STRATTON FiftyNinth in a Series of Jess Williams Westerns A Jess Williams Western Book 59 edition by Robert J Thomas Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The books on Jess Williams life is one of continuing history of the west It is engrossing, characters are very believable and he adds that something extra that causes you to want to read more and more. After every book I find myself anxiously awaiting the next book. I know if you ever start reading these books you will never stop. ENJOY. Lavonne Jones
As always the ingenuity of Robert Thomas shows thru in another Jess Williams book. He has a vivid imagination to come up with 63 different plots and keep them all fresh and new. I have bought all of the books and am sorry that there is not a 64th as yet. The 59th is filled with action and some suspense. Mostly tho you see a side of Jess Williams that keeps coming thru. The kindness that is built into the character makes him good, and human. I hope you read all of the books and I hope that he continues to write this series. Thank You Mr. Thomas
As usual Robert J Thomas has written another great story to entertain his readers. Have enjoyed this series very much. Highly recommend.
Never miss one of the Jess Williams series. Now on number 60. The good guy always wins. Mr Thomas works hard to get Jess into some different circumstances every book. Now that Shadow has been introduced, it gets even better. Does need more female involvement. I thought J. Johnstone was good, but Robert Thomas is even better at the westerns. You know what the outcome will be when you pick up the book, but Jess can certainly take strange twists till he gets his man, or more than likely several men. In this series it does not seem to make a difference where you start, just so you read all 60 books.
RJT has written his usual genre, a western, about Jess Williams, bounty hunter extraordinare. The cast of characters include his old friends, Frank Reedy, John Bodine and Shadow. JW, even though he is chasing a mass murder he still has time to stop and assist the others, he has met, when they have been assaulted. JW stops two men from continuing their attacks on the down trodden. This is an excellent read for the genre..... ER

I have 2 favorite characters in Western novels. One is Johnny McCabe by Brad Dennison. The other is Jess Williams by Robert J. Thomas. In fact, of all the gazillion books available on for , these 2 characters constitute the only books I actually pay for - as soon as they are available for download. All my other downloads are free books.

That said, I'm finally going to complain about something that quit being funny 20 or so books - or more - ago. It may not bother Jess the character but it sure bothers me the reader! And that annoying, aggravating bother has a name John Bodine. When Bodine was first mentioned in one of the Jess Williams books and he and Jess eventually became what Jess refers to as one of his closest friends. Why??? John Bodine is nothing but a fat complainer and a fat user. Bodine has plenty of money of his own, thanks to Jess, of course. Yet, if he even hears a rumor that Jess could be in the same town he's in, he immediately opens a tab in Jess's name at the saloon, at the hotel, at the mercantile, at the livery, at any other place he can think of. He immediately begins drinking the most expensive whiskey in the saloon and he buys everyone in the saloon the same expensive whiskey. He immediately rents the most expensive room available in the hotel, in Jess's name, of course. Even in the town of Stratton, TX, where Bodine is the sheriff and, as such, is furnished a free room at the hotel along with free meals in the hotel restaurant. He bills all his meals to Jess even though they're free to him. And, the mercantile? Oh my God!! He immediately buys new clothes from the skin out along with new boots and a new hat. The most expensive cigars available, and the whole box not just a few cigars. And anything else he can think of. He's not my definition of a friend. Not by a long shot. He does this, he says, because Jess can afford it. Well, so can John Bodine afford it. But, as Bodine puts it, it's much more fun when Jess pays for it. I guess I'd have to admit that Bodine has Jess's back and is pretty much unconditionally loyal to Jess. And, that's great. But, I still can't like the man. I did in the beginning but not anymore. For me, his constant mooching off Jess has finally overridden any of the things he might do that should make me like the man. I truly hope Mr. Thomas scales back on Bodine mooching off Jess and using Jess's friendship in future books! Occasionally isn't too bad but constantly is just annoying, almost too much to keep me from enjoying the story! It doesn't annoy me when Jess offers or insists on paying for everything. It's only annoying when always Bodine but sometimes Reedy and Callahan just expect him to do so and just go ahead and act accordingly before Jess is even there to agree or not. THAT is what really annoys me big time!

Now, something that I do enjoy is Shadow. He's made an appearance in the last few books and I look for him to make an appearance in every single book since his character was first introduced!! I love that he's a timber wolf and, really, he's the perfect partner for Jess. I hope Shadow makes frequent appearances in all future books because, in my opinion, he's an asset to the whole story!!

Even considering how incredibly much I'm getting fed up with John Bodine, Jess Williams is still one of my favorite Western characters! And, just as I have with all 59 books available, I'll be buying number 60 as soon as it's available to purchase and download!
